The Albillo Mayor is an ancient, indigenous white grape variety from the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, renowned for producing white wines with great structure, elegance, and freshness.

- Grape Characteristics:

  • Clusters and berries: It produces medium-sized, compact clusters with medium-sized berries and thick, resilient skins.
  • Acidity and profile: It has good natural acidity that balances its full-bodied character and aging potential.
  • Aromas: Floral and fruit nuances (such as peach, apricot, and pear) stand out, accompanied by mineral and toasted notes if aged in barrel.

It is an indigenous white grape variety from Castile and León. Its main historical territory is around the Duero basin, especially Ribera del Duero, although it is also found in other areas of Castile and León.

The vine usually produces small or medium-sized clusters and relatively small berries. It is an early-ripening variety, which is important in continental climate regions.

What are its wines like?

It depends greatly on the area, yield, age of the vines, and winemaking. It can produce anything from simple, fresh whites to quite complex wines.

  • Fruit: apple, pear, peach, and stone fruit.
  • Citrus: lemon and grapefruit in some wines.
  • Flowers: delicate floral notes.
  • Herbs: vegetal and Mediterranean hints.
  • Texture: it usually has more body and structure than many young white wines.
  • Acidity: usually moderate.
  • Aging: the best examples can develop notes of nuts, honey, spices, and a certain oxidative complexity.
