Monastrell (also known internationally as Mourvèdre or mataro) is a red grape variety of Mediterranean origin, famous for producing intense, structured wines with great aging potential. Although it is grown all over the world, its main strongholds are:
Spain: It is the queen grape of the southeast of the peninsula. It stands out strongly in the Denominations of Origin of Jumilla, Yecla, Alicante, and Bullas.
France: Under the name of Mourvèdre, it is essential in the south of the country, especially in the Bandol region (Provence) and as a fundamental part of the traditional blends of the Rhône Valley.
New World: It is successfully grown in warm regions of Australia and California (United States), usually forming part of "GSM" style wines (Grenache, Syrah, and Monastrell).
- Profile: It usually results in wines with a high alcohol content and a strong tannic load.
- Tasting notes: Aromas of ripe black fruits (blackberries, plums) stand out, accompanied by touches of damp earth, spices (black pepper) and notes of game or leather as the wine ages.
- Versatility: Although its strength lies in aged reds, it is commonly used to make very fresh rosé wines and even traditional sweet and fortified wines (such as Fondillón de Alicante).
- Red meats grilled or roasted.
- Large game (deer, wild boar) and structured stews.
- Iberian cured meats and aged cheeses.
- Powerful Mediterranean rice dishes (such as the rice with rabbit and snails typical of its area of origin).
